Hailing from Scotland, Julian has always been close to and surrounded by the sea. From a young age he developed a passion for the sea on family boat trips and racing sailing dinghies.

It wasn’t until after studying chemistry and having a career in the family business of hospitality that Julian enrolled in a cadetship on deep sea cargo vessels. This took him to all corners of the globe and re-ignited his love for the oceans.

At home he completed his qualifications at the then Glasgow College of Nautical Studies and achieved an Officer of the Watch (Unlimited) licence, Nautical Science Diploma and a Professional Diploma in Marine Operations Management on an accelerated program. He now holds a Master (3000GT) and Chief Officer (Unlimited) licence.

His career has since been varied and challenging from the intense and precise work of a senior officer on channel ferries to commanding deep sea marine conservation missions and offshore construction support in the formidable North Sea.

More recently Julian has taken on the challenge of the high latitudes and has been working on various missions supporting logistics for science, film crews and tourists in both the Arctic and Antarctic.

When not on the bridge Julian always indulges his strong interest in management systems and efficiency, coming from his rich background of both highly professional and also volunteer based organisations he endeavours to set up and maintain workable and efficient, but most of all effective, safety management and operational management procedures. His strong belief is that this, coupled with honest and fair management empowers his teams to take initiative and engage in their roles.
